Advice for beginning guitar players

Advice for beginning guitar players

I get a lot of questions about the best guitar to purchase for beginners. From my experience, the best place to start is asking yourself or your child what type of guitar is most exciting and appealing. If you or your child would like to start out and play an electric that is what you should purchase! If you find or your child would like to start out on an acoustic guitar, that is the one for you.

Many people think the acoustic should be the one to start out with because traditionally that’s what beginners have been told. I feel that a lot of this had to do with the expense of electric guitars in earlier days. Now you can buy a decent beginning acoustic, classical or electric guitar for around $150.

I feel the biggest factor in deciding which guitar to buy is what you (or your child) want to play. If you see yourself strumming some chords around a campfire you might want to consider an acoustic guitar instead of the $2000 Les Paul with a 6 foot tall Marshall stack! But if your favorite band is Avenged Sevenfold or Jimi Hendrix, then the electric might be the better choice.

Another point that I try to drive home is excitement. Inspiration is everything! If you’re not inspired to play a certain type of guitar purchase, the guitar that inspires you or your child! It will help in practice motivation.

The electric guitar is a much easer instrument to physically play due to thinner strings and can build up confidence faster. The acoustic is a bit more demanding due to the thicker strings. However this can be beneficial when switching from the acoustic to the electric.
